BA (Hons) Film & Screen Arts

We have established links with NAHEMI, BFI London, the Royal Television Society, and the Aesthetica Film Festival, as well as independent filmmaking professionals in the UK and abroad.

<p dir="ltr">Recent visiting lecturers to the course include <strong>Maria Norman, Head of Production at BBC Natural History Unit, </strong>award-winning filmmaker<strong> Ben Wheatley, Oscar-winning producer Mia Bays, </strong>and<strong> Production Designer Ed Turner</strong>. You’ll have the opportunity to attend international film festivals such as <strong>Rotterdam</strong>, <strong>Oberhausen</strong>, and <strong>Aesthetica</strong>, where students have screened their own work as well as held panel discussions.</p> <p dir="ltr">You will have the opportunity to work with brands like <a href="https://www.asff.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aesthetica Short Film Festival</a>, <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/visit/plymouth-arts-cinema">Plymouth Arts Cinema</a>, <a href="https://twofour.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TwoFour</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Upon graduation, our students pursue various career paths, such as i<strong>ndependent filmmakers, commercial filmmakers, documentary filmmakers, artist filmmakers, directors, producers, production designers, cinematographers, scriptwriters, editors, location managers, researchers, post-production specialists, </strong>and more.<br /></p>

Our Graduates

Dan Broadley
Finding his love for cinematography during his studies on BA (Hons) Film Arts all while honing his craft as a musician, Daniel Broadley has since found a way to combine both of his creative talents as Director for Kode Media as well as founding his own agency, Daniel Broadley Films.His passion for marrying both audio and visual together has made him a stand-out creative for creating promos, and he has worked on projects for bands such as You Me at Six, Don Broco, Ward Thomas and Lower Than Atlantis. “There was a lot of freedom to explore filmmaking as a medium at Arts University Plymouth. We were encouraged to experiment and think outside the box, even if it meant failing. This helped me become more brave as a creative, to not fear criticism.”
James Ellwood
James is an experienced filmmaker with a specialism in social documentary, and interest in interview-led storytelling. Born in Cornwall, he gained a first class BA (Hons) Film Arts from Arts University Plymouth in 2008. James began working with Fotonow in Spring 2011 to develop film project work with the organisation. In addition to extensive experience of arts and community project management, he brings a broad range of educational and teaching experience, having taught in a variety of formal and informal settings. James currently works as a Communications & Engagement Coordinator at Plymouth Energy Community.
2 Tom Bispham at MISFITS Boxing
Tom Bispham graduated from BA (Hons) Digital Media Production (now part of BA (Hons) Film & Screen Arts) at Arts University Plymouth in 2022 and has since worked with a range of brands, companies and influencers, including DJ Tom Zanetti, Glastonbury Festival, MISFITS Boxing, Northcore and UN Patron of the Oceans, Lewis Pugh. Specialising in creating short form content for social media, marketing and advertising, Tom’s career has gone from strength to strength very quickly since graduating. He credits part of his success to the five years that he spent studying at Arts University Plymouth, beginning with an A-Level equivalent Extended Diploma at the university’s Pre-Degree campus.

Aden Barwick completed his A-Levels at Coombe Dean in 2010 and studied BA (Hons) Film at Arts University Plymouth from 2012 to 2015. In the same year as graduating from university, Aden co-founded Round One Films, an award-winning Plymouth-based Creative Video Marketing agency.Past clients of Round One include the United Nations, BBC, Drake Circus, Theatre Royal Plymouth, HM Coastguard, Barnado’s, University of Plymouth, BFI Film Academy and many more. Aden also works part-time as a Video Content Creator at Arts University Plymouth, capturing lots of the filmed content used to represent the city’s arts university.
