BA (Hons) Costume Production

Overview

Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to develop the key professional, transferable skills for employability in the creative industries and work in partnership with other sectors locally, nationally or internationally.

Nestled near the renowned Theatre Royal Plymouth, students enjoy exclusive insights into theatre productions and behind-the-scenes tours. Delve deeper with masterclasses led by industry experts in prop making, millinery, and costume design, enriching your skill set with hands-on experience. To expand your experience, you will also visit events such as TheatreCraft, an offstage theatre careers event in London, and performances including opera, ballet, drama and musicals. Our strong international connections allow our students to take a semester of study with one of our partner institutions within Europe and North America. As a student here, you will opportunities to work with brands and companies such as National Trust, Netflix, Soapbox Children's Theatre, The Box, Trigger Productions Ltd, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Prague Quadrennial. Upon graduating, our students have become Costume Assistants (Film & TV), Prop Makers, Costume Interpreters, Designers, Milliners, Stylists, Buyers, Costume Supervisors, Theatrical Milliners and Heritage Professionals.

Our Graduates

Rae Hildbrand

Originally from Switzerland, Rae is a London based costume maker, wardrobe assistant and dresser. Rae was a trained dressmaker with ten years of experience in the theatre, film and TV industry before completing her BA in Costume Production, achieving a First Class Honours on graduating in 2018. Rae has worked with the London Theatre Company, The Old Vic, London Palladium and the English National Opera in roles such as Costume Technician and Dresser.

Miki Neal

Miki studied BA (Hons) Costume Production at Arts University Plymouth, graduating in 2019 with a 2:1. From there, she went straight into industry, working as a freelance illustrator, costume and prop maker as well as work as a seamstress and model maker for The Twins FX, a theatrical special effects company in Dorset. Miki has contributed to making flying Deloreans for Back to the Future: The Musical seen across the globe to giant elephants for the London Palladium.

Jerry Moore

Jerry Moore is an experienced costumier, having created costumes for theatre, film and TV, including working on BBC's Poldark and Book of Mormon. He is a specialist in pattern cutting and tailoring. He has been a lecturer on Arts University Plymouth's BA (Hons) Costume Production programme since September 2018. He teaches on the programme's prop making, interdisciplinary studies and professional practice modules. Jerry has also run our Short Courses in Pattern Cutting here at the university since 2016. Since 2010, Jerry has also worked for Theatre Royal Plymouth's Wardrobe Department. During his time there he has worked on such productions as Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty, Wicked for Det Ny Teater in Denmark, and Love Never Dies, also for Denmark. He also works as a freelance Costume Tailor/Costumier, and has worked on a range of theatre, film and TV productions, including Book of Mormon (West End), working as costume designer and Head Of Department for The Ghost Ship (film directed by Robert Young), as well as working as the Children's Tailor for brooding BBC drama Poldark (Series 2 Episode 5). Jerry studied BA (Hons) Costume Production and Associated Crafts and MA Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice, both here at Arts University Plymouth.

Lucy Collins

Lucy graduated from BA (Hons) Costume Production & Associated Crafts in 2022 and was already accepted as a costume designer and sourcer for the up and coming theatre production company, SE Theatre Company, based in Stratford Upon Avon, working on the Shakespearean classic, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She has since worked as a Dresser on Shrek The Musical in Woking.
